Practice and Attendance

We will meet every day after school at 3:00pm at the ticket booth by the entrance to the stadium/track.  Attendance is a MUST!  If a student is going to miss practice, it must be communicated to the coaches prior to their absence. Multiple absences or unexcused absences may result in consequences to be determined by the coaches.  We will not tolerate half-hearted commitment. It is not fair to the athletes who show up every day and do all the requirements.

We will have Saturday practices. Most Saturday practices are before we start racing and we will communicate to the kids when and where we will be meeting.

Students can put their personal belongings either in their cars or lockers. We will also be able to lock some stuff in the cross country storage closet. The coaches will provide a safe place to keep personal items and valuables but ultimately it is up to the student to make sure their things are safe.

Lettering Policy

There are several ways to earn a varsity letter.

  • Qualify for State. (Alternates included)

  • Run in the top varsity races at League, Regionals.

  • Compete in 4 or more varsity meets.

  • Returning seniors who show exceptional leadership and attitude during the season.

All letters are subject to coach’s discretion.

Shoes & Clothing

Although cross country is a fairly inexpensive sport, it is important to have a good pair of running shoes. Please remember when shoe shopping that it is more important that the shoe fits and feels good; not how “cool” it looks!

We will practice in normal running shoes or “training shoes.” Racing spikes are not necessary for all runners, but we highly encourage them for race days. They will make a big difference! Varsity runners will be expected to race in spikes. Please don’t hesitate to ask one of the coaches if you have any questions about buy racing spikes.

The team will provide a racing jersey, racing shorts, and a warm up. We will also provide a team t-shirt at the beginning of the season. We expect our kids to wear the full “kit” on race day. We want to look uniform and represent our school! Please do not let your student wear pajama pants, college apparel, jeans, or anything non-school-branded etc. on race day.  We will also have a team gear order early in the season so students and parents can buy apparel as well.

Race Day

Most meets will have 3 different divisions. Boys and girls races will be separate but each gender will have Varsity, JV, and C-Team races.

Varsity races allow 7 runners per team. That does not mean we will always run 7 people. Although race times are critical to determining varsity spots, other aspects will also be considered when determining our varsity teams. We want to make sure our athletes are mentally mature and physically ready for the demands of a varsity race.

The girls race distance will be 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) at most meets. Girls will run 5k at some meets.

The boys race distance will be 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).
